Who I am
Hi. My name is Alessandro Palla. I’m a PhD student in Embedded System Design at University of Pisa since November 2014.
I took my master degree, final grades 110/100, in Electronic Engineering in fall 2014, with a master thesis named: “Wearable Speech Enhancement System based on MEMS Microphone Array for Disabled People”. I developed this project in STMicroelectronics, a world leader corporation in electronics devices.
Before that I worked in Dialog Semiconductor in summer 2013. During this internship I developed an innovative methodology for PMIC (Power Management IC) efficiency measurement using current pulses. These PMIC are the ones used in top-of-the-range smartphones.
My current research topic is speech enhancement, in particularly for speech recognition purpose. An embedded system is able to extract from input sound only user’s voice, rejecting environmental noise, using a microphone array. That solution works because the array exploits the difference in time of arrival of sound from one microphone to another, and is able to filter undesired directions.
I’m also involved in various projects about assistive technology, gesture recognition and sensor fusion. You can find the list of all projects in the appropriate section of this website.
Students that are interested in a master thesis in embedded systems design can find some useful info in the section Didattica. There you can find a list of available theses, that can be developed in the department or in an external company, and also some link to my teaching activity.
